Shipito has offered a new way to send packages with lithium batteries and electronics for its customers from Russia. Shipito offers Polonez Parcel for customers from Russia now. Polonez Parcel packages are shipped by Container to Poland and then given to the postal service for delivery in Russia.

Polonez Parcel limitations:

• Maximum weight is 44 lbs, maximum size 47″x23″x23″(should be more than enough for the large 36″x17″x17″ consolidation box)
• No insuranceis available. Polonez unfortunately does not insure packages delivered by the postal service. For this reason, we do not recommend shipping expensive packages. Better solution is to remove lithium batteries from your electronics, ship actual devices by USPS with tracking and insurance, and use Polonez only for batteries.
• Minimum chargeable weight is 20 lbs, so even if you ship small package, you will pay the same as for 20 lbs!
• Dimensional weight formula is L x W x H / 140, dimensional weight is used if higher than actual weight.
• Polonez claims delivery in about two months, but it is not guaranteed, and it may take even little longer than that.
• Polonez picks up packages once a month, usually last complete weekend in the given month.
• Available from California warehouses of Shipito only, no Polonez package can be shipped from the Oregon warehouse (You can transfer your package from Oregon to California for a fee).

Polonez Parcel is very expensive for Russia. For example, I have compared the cost of shipping via USPS, Shipito Airmail and Polonez parcel for my two packages sent in 2012 via USPS Express Mail International:

• Airmail Express packages can be insured and tracked, but they cost about the same as USPS Express Mail packages.

As you can see many US online retailers ship to freight/parcel/package forwarders. And since prices are significantly lower in the USA, many customers use services like Shipito for shipping even to distant countries like Russia, Australia, New Zealand.

Personally I prefer to use amazon.com more than any other US shop. Not only it is the largest shop in the USA, but also accepts international credit cards, ships to freight/parcel/package forwarders like Shipito, and it is great at refunds. And you don’t need to pay sales tax (5-10% in many states) when shipping from Amazon to the no salex tax location in Tualatin, Oregon.

How to save money by using Multi Piece Shipment (MPS) service

If you have more than one package going to the same delivery address, you may save money by using MPS (Multi Piece Shipment) service. You can usually get the best savings for several small packages. In some cases, MPS may be cheaper than consolidating these packages into one box. MPS can also significantly lower shipping costs for larger packages that cannot be consolidated.

If you use Shipito shipping forwarder and have a Shipito Virtual Mailbox, the MPS service is available for you. It is available for DHL, TNT and FedEx shipping methods.

FedEx MPS (Fedex Multiple-Piece Shipment)

FedEx MPS pricing is automatically available on each Shipito account. Just select more than one package for immediate mail out. Select the same FedEx shipping method (Economy or Priority). And make sure that the addressee is exactly the same. MPS discount will be automatically calculated and lower price charged on each package. Additional discount can be up to 30-40%.

MPS discount is not guaranteed. Expect to pay the quote you see on your shipment. If the MPS discounts kicks in the price is automatically lowered. Sometimes MPS discounts will not be as big as discounted rate already provided through Shipito. It seems that more packages you send at the same time the more likely is to get the MPS discount.

New Shipito MPS system: DHL Express and TNT Express Multiple-Piece Shipment

There are some limitations at this moment:

• Only DHL Express and TNT Express shipping is available. To ship FedEx MPS shipment, you have to use the old method (see above).
• The maximum number of packages in MPS shipment is limited to 10 when using DHL Express and limited to 3 when using TNT Express. The limits may be increased in the future.
• MPS is not available to Russia (because of the customs problems with express carriers like DHL, TNT, FedEx)

How to enter new DHL Express or TNT Express MPS Request ?

1. Login to your Shipito account, and go to the “Packages in Warehouse” section.
2. Click the “MPS Request” button. New window with the MPS Request form will show up.
   
3. Select a Shipito Warehouse with packages you want to ship using MPS.
4. Select all packages you want to include in the shipment and click the “Select Packages” button. Some packages may not be available for MPS shipping (for example if they are scheduled for separate mailout or for consolidation). These packages are displayed on the bottom of the page with the explanation why they are not available at this moment.
   
5. In the next step, enter your delivery address for the MPS shipment.
   
6. When delivery address is confirmed, system calculates total MPS postage for various shipping methods. After the form is displayed, select the shipping method.
   
7. The final step displays a confirmation form with the MPS shipment summary. And it will also show how much would the shipping cost be if all packages were shipped separately using the same shipping method. After the separate shipping cost is loaded, you can confirm the MPS Shipment
   

As you can see, the new MPS system on Shipito that allows to ship via DHL Express and TNT Express is better, because it shows you the exact MPS shipping rate. If it is cheaper than shipping separately, you can confirm the shipment and the price will be locked in and guaranteed.

Shipito complaints after 18 months of using it

I’ve been using Shipito for more than 18 months. I have consolidated 124 packages and sent 20 of them to Russia. Lots of experience not only to write praises, but also complaints.

What I don’t like about Shipito

• Changing service plans. Shipito has been introducing new service plans, changing current ones and removing them. This is very annoying.
• Hidden Charges. Shipito does mention that they charge extra for heavy packages ($10 for over 30 pounds, $20 for over 70 pounds, $30 for over 100 pounds, $50 for over 150 pounds). The most interesting thing is that they charge extra $8.5 for consolidating large packages. And if you have consolidated your packages already and the consolidated package is ready to be mailed out, then they will charge $44 for consolidating this package with another one!!! They call it a double repacking fee.

  If you don’t request them to take pictures of the contents of the packages, they will charge 1% as an additional insurance. Does it really have to do anything with insurance? Absolutely not. Plus they charge 1% as a warehouse insurance, although it is not related to insurance as well.

  And how about their Bank fee of 4.3%? They charge it even if you fill in your account using one of their partners.

  But can you find all this information on the Shipito Services and Prices page? For whatever reason they don’t mention all these hidden fees at all:

• Blurry pictures. Many of the pictures of the packages they make are blurry. In many cases it is next to impossible to recognize the sender of the package. You can notify them that the label is unreadable and they will take another picture. But why can’t they always take good pictures?
• Significant delays every Chrismas and New Year. Some customers had to wait up to a week for the packages to be consolidated and sent.
• Account validation. Shipito requires you to send 2 IDs to verify your account. Moreover you need to send a utility bill and a notarized FORM 1583 to fully verify your account. You can receive packages, but not letters without providing the notarized FORM 1583.
• Limiting the size of the mailbox. Although my mailbox has bee 44% full at most, I don’t really want to have any limits. The more packages their customers send, the more they earn, so I don’t understand why posing any limits like that at all.
• Not working on holidays.
• No mobile apps, so you can easily manage your account from an iPhone, Android smartphone,… The web-site is not mobile device friendly at all.
• No branded duct tape. It would allow to identify whether your package was opened or not.
• Not perfect packaging by default for Russian post. Some russian mail forwarders know really well how russian post works, so they take additional steps to prevent damages of your goods. And you don’t need to pay any additional fees for this service.
• Poor customer service. I must admit that sometimes they do solve your problems. But sometimes communication with their customer service turns into endless discussion, when they don’t even recognize their own mistakes.
• Not perfect packaging by default for Russian post. Some russian mail forwarders know really well how russian post works, so they take additional steps to prevent damages of your goods. And you don’t need to pay any additional fees for this service.

Is it that bad that I will switch to some other shipping forwarder? The fees are not bad. You can find my examples here and here. Despite all the negativity mentioned above, it works good for me. And my Virtual Mailbox plan will end up in more than 6 months. If I see any better shipping forwarder after that, I will think about it.

I do pay $50 for a yearly membership in Shipito, while VIAdress membership is free. But if I send a package of 34.7 lbs via USPS to Russia using VIAddress, I will pay extra $55+ compared to Shipito.

Unfortunately shipping fees is not the only problem of VIAddress. VIAdress has the lowest possible rating on BBB. And there many complaints about VIAddress from around the world, some of them even lead an investigation by The Indiana Attorney General’s office.

Would you recommend to use VIAddress?

I have never been a customer of VIAddress, but personally I prefer to stay away from it.

Shipito shipping rates are one of the best. Considering the amount of services Shipito provides, their quality and cost, I think Shipito is one of the best freight forwarding companies.

As you can see many US online retailers ship to freight/parcel/package forwarders. And since prices are significantly lower in the USA, many customers use services like Shipito for shipping even to distant countries like Russia, Australia, New Zealand.

My favorite shops shipping to Shipito warehouse in Torrance, CA

Personally I prefer to use amazon.com more than any other US shop. Not only it is the largest shop in the USA, but also accepts international credit cards, ships to freight/parcel/package forwarders like Shipito, and it is great at refunds. And you don’t need to pay californian sales tax (9.5%) when shipping from Amazon to the Torrance warehouse. Note that you do need to pay sales tax for some merchants from the Amazon marketplace. Also note that you may use another warehouse of Shipito in Tualatin, Oregon, which is a no sales tax location.

Also I like USA private shopping clubs especially the ones that support international debit and credit cards:

• Zulily.

While you may use Assisted Purchases from Shipito or any other service when making purchases in online stores, such services won’t work well with lightning fast sales that private shopping clubs offer. So it is really great that private shopping clubs support international cards and ship to freight forwarders (also known as mail forwarders, package forwarders).
