How to purchase a mountain bicycle (MTB) or a hybrid bike in Germany or the UK and ship it to Russia or any other country

When I started purchasing stuff in the USA and China, one of my first ideas was to buy a mountain bicycle (MTB) or a hybrid bike. I really liked the prices in the USA on web-sites like bikesdirect.com. The problem is that the package with the bike is oversized, so it is not possible to ship it by USPS Express Mail or USPS Priority Mail. Some bikes on eBay can be sent anywhere in the world, but the shipping rates are usually outrageous. I was not willing to buy a bicycle in China, because of the potential problems with the quality of Chinese products. The next obvious step for me was to search in Europe. Luckily there are a couple of shops there that ship anywhere in the world including Russia. And they exclude VAT when shipping outside the European Union.

Doesn’t sell Kona and Cube bicycles to clients in Russia. Doesn’t pack bicycles good enough for shipping via Russian Post.

How to make purchases on Amazon and other online stores and ship them to APO and FPO military addresses

Shipping a package to an APO (Army/Air Force Post Office – for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force postal facilities) or FPO (Fleet Post Office – for U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard postal facilities) address is really no different than mailing a regular domestic package. The problem is that some eBay sellers and online stores do not ship to APO/FPO addresses either because of the package carrier they use, or due to software or business process limitations, or due to ignorance. This article covers some of the APO/FPO shipping restrictions, and how to overcome some of them.

Amazon APO/FPO address shipping restrictions

Amazon has the following APO/FPO address shipping restrictions:

Having trouble entering an APO, FPO, or DPO address on our order form? Following these steps should help:

• City field: Enter “APO,”FPO,” or “DPO.”
• State/Province/Region field: Enter the two-letter code for the region where the recipient is stationed. Typically, but not always, the code is “AE” for recipients stationed in Europe, Canada, Africa, or the Middle East; “AA” for recipients stationed in the Americas; and “AP” for recipients stationed in Asia or the Pacific.
• Country field: Always select “United States” from the drop-down menu regardless of where the recipient is stationed.

Following these steps will ensure that you’re charged the correct shipping amount and that your order will be delivered in a timely fashion. All shipments to APO, FPO, DPO addresses are sent via U.S. Priority or First Class Mail. We estimate 5 to 7 business days for delivery once the order has been shipped; however, some destinations may take up to 21 days.

Most items can be shipped to APO, FPO, and DPO addresses, except:

Additionally, some apparel, baby, camera and photo, electronics, health and personal care, housewares, jewelry, software, sports, and tools and hardware items cannot be shipped to APO, FPO, or DPO addresses. An error message will appear at checkout if you enter an APO, FPO, or DPO address and the item isn’t eligible to be shipped to that address. Check the item’s product detail page for eligibility.

The only way to get packages to an APO/FPO/DPO address is via the U.S. Postal Service. The package is delivered to the military post office by the USPS, and then shipped overseas through the military postal system. This means that ALL USPS size, weight and content restrictions must be adhered to in order for a package/parcel to be mailed out to an APO/FPO address. In general package can’t exceed 70 pounds, be larger than 130 inches when you add the length (the longest side) and the girth, or contain prohibited items (flammables, air conditioners, etc.) You can always break the packages/parcels down into several smaller packages that fall under the weight and size limit. Note that each APO/FPO address has its own specific set of Zip Code Restrictions, these restrictions always supercedes the normal weight limit of 70 pounds and normal size limit of 130 inches (length + girth).

Overcoming geographical restrictions of APO/FPO address shipping restrictions

Some online stores and eBay sellers do not ship APO/FPO addresses. There are several reasons for that:

• Some eBay sellers and online stores use United Parcel Services (UPS) or Federal Express (FedEx) to ship parcels/packages only, while only USPS can deliver purchases to APO/FPO addresses.

   

  

  eBay seller shipping methods: We only ship to the United States. Shipping is via UPS Ground. Please be aware that UPS can NOT ship to P.O. Boxes, APO or FPO addresses. We currently ship inside the United States only and do not offer shipping to international addresses.

   

• Some sellers just don’t know an APO/FPO/DPO address is, or their website software does not allow the Military Mail States AA, AE and AP to be entered.
  

  eBay seller shipping methods: Shipping to: United States. Excludes: US Protectorates, APO/FPO

If this is the case, you may

• Contact the eBay seller or online store and ask to ship to your APO/FPO addresses.
• Use a parcel/package forwarding service (freight forwarder) like Shipito. By now you know that a package/parcel forwarding service must be able to deliver by USPS (The United States Postal Service).

I use USPS Express Mail which is not offered by many other package/parcel forwarding services. You can also use Shipito Airmail Priority or Polonez Parcel to avoid USPS restrictions for delivering lithium batteries and electronics with lithium, Li-ion, Li-Pol batteries (Kindle readers contain lithium battery which can’t be removed).

How to overcome geographical restrictions and ship eBay items outside the United States

In my experience most eBay sellers refuse to overcome shipping restrictions and ship internationally, although

• I was willing to pay with Paypal
• I was happy to the shipping cost in advance
• I have a positive eBay feedback history

But it might still be worthwhile to write to an eBay seller and ask about shipping outside the United States.

Luckily there are package/parcel forwarding services. I started using one of them, namely Shipito, six months ago. Now I can ship my packages to any country in the world

(Canada, Australia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands (US), United Kingdom, Japan, Austria, Russia, the Ukraine, Belarus, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Luxembourg, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Slovakia, Bahrain, Israel, India, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, The Bahamas, China, Bermuda, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Kuwait,…)

as well as to Alaska, Hawaii, APO, FPO, and DPO Addresses, DOS Addresses and U.S. Protectorates.

The only things I need to take into account are:

• customs duties and prohibited items
• size and weight
• whether it is possible to ship to a destination using a preferred shipping method (and Shipito offers plenty of them: USPS Express Mail, USPS Priority Mail, Polonez Parcel, USPS Flat rate box and Flat rate envelope, FedEx, FedEx MPS, Fedex Freight, Shipito Air Mail, DHL)

So geographical shipping restrictions posed by eBay sellers are easy to overcome. Besides eBay, Shipito allows to make purchase in any online store. And you can even make purchases in offline stores!

And because Shipito offers package consolidation, I have saved a lot on shipping. So I’m glad I didn’t use eBay sellers directly. Even when they do offer international shipping, in many cases I prefer to consolidate packages first and then ship overseas using Shipito.

Comparing shipping rates to Russia: Shipping Epson v600 Photo from Amazon via Shipito vs. from B&H Photo Video directly using USPS Express Mail (EMS)

I’ve decided to use USPS Express Mail for shipping Epson v600 Photo scanner to Russia. This way of shipping is faster than USPS Priority Mail. Besides your parcels are delivered to your door when using USPS Express Mail, while they are delivered to your postal office when using USPS Priority Mail. USPS Express Mail is slightly more expensive than USPS Priority Mail, but it is worth every penny.

Shipping Epson Perfection v600 Photo Scanner from Amazon (not its marketplace) to a USA location is absolutely FREE. So I shipped the scanner to my middleman, a US company called Shipito, for free. I’ve used the “FREE with Super Saver Shipping” option on Amazon.

Then I used Shipito to ship the scanner to Russia via USPS Express Mail. It costed me USD $105.24. Other expenses when using the “Individual packages” plan are equal to zero (no setup fees, no monthly fees).

As you can see, the same shipping method was chosen (USPS Express Mail), but it was USD $35.76 cheaper to ship from Amazon using Shipito, than to ship from B&H Photo Video directly.

Note: The american version of Epson v600 Photo supports 110V only, so you need a different power supply or a voltage stabilizer to use it in Russia. Personally I use Robiton IN3800S AC adapter (Input: 100-240V, 50-60Hz, Output: 24V, 1.5A). It was cheaper to buy Robiton IN3800S and replace its cable with the one from Epson A411B than to buy Epson A411E AC adapter (Input: 220-240V, Output: 24V, 1.3A) or to buy Epson v600 compatible AC adapter (Input: 220-240V, Output: 24V, 1.5A) on eBay. Note that replacing the Robiton IN3800S cable will require you to use special tools and a soldering iron, you won’t be able to do it with regular screw drivers only. Besides Robiton I was also suggested to use an AC adapter from MeanWell.

Note: Usually Amazon sends multiple goods in several packages, so it is recommended to use the “Virtual Mailbox” plan on Shipito when buying multple items. “Virtual Mailbox” allows you to consolidate packages (You pay only $2 for every consolidated package).

Amazon Shipping Restrictions

Amazon has the following Shipping restrictions:

Warranty issues and manufacturer restrictions prevent us from shipping certain products to all geographical locations. In addition, some items too big to ship to a P.O. box must be shipped to a street address. You’ll be notified while placing your order if we’re unable to ship specific items to the address you’ve selected. Below are some general guidelines for items shipped by Amazon.com to the following destinations:

• Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico
• APO, FPO, and DPO Addresses
• DOS Addresses
• U.S. Protectorates
• Prisons

Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico Addresses

Some items from our Tools & Hardware, Electronics, and Outdoor Living stores can’t be shipped to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico if they are extremely heavy, oddly-shaped, or considered hazardous. APO, FPO, and DPO Addresses

Most items can be shipped to APO, FPO, and DPO addresses, except:

Prisons

Amazon.com delivers to penitentiaries, but we strongly suggest you contact the prison first to confirm that they accept deliveries and to note any special regulations the prison might have. Some prisons don’t allow delivery of hardcover books. Others place a limit on the number of items contained in a package.

We’re unable to affix any special labels or instructions to the packages and on the outside will indicate only the destination address, our company name, and our return address. We also cannot allow gifts to be sent anonymously to inmates; the sender’s billing address will appear on the order invoice.

Because inmates cannot sign for deliveries, packages must be sent via U.S. Mail. While Amazon.com often sends packages via U.S. Mail, we also use UPS and FedEx. There is no way for customers to request a specific shipper. To avoid delivery problems, you might consider having the items shipped to you and then shipping them to the penitentiary via U.S. Mail.

Overcoming Amazon Shipping Restrictions and shipping outside the US

Amazon.com accepts international debit and credit cards, so there are no problems paying for your items. But when ordering from Amazon.com you may get one of the following error messages:

Important Message: “This item cannot be shipped to the address you selected”
Important Message: “We are not able to ship this item to your default shipping address”
Important Message: “Item cannot be shipped to the selected address”
Important Message: “We’re sorry. This item can’t be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order by changing its quantity to 0 and clicking the update button below. ( See geographical restrictions.)”
Important Message: “We’re sorry. One or more items can’t be shipped to your selected destination. Please sign in to change the shipping address or delete the item(s) from your order.”
Important Message: “We’re Sorry. Due to shipping restrictions, the following item(s) cannot be shipped to the shipping address you have selected.”

It is easy to overcome this limitation and ship to your country. Just get a virtual address in the USA using a company like Shipito. Shipito allows you to use virtual USA addresses. They have multiple locations in the USA. If you use their warehouse in Torrance, California, you will be able to consolidate your packages (if needed) and send them to your country by USPS Express Mail, USPS Priority Mail, Polonez Parcel, USPS Flat rate box and Flat rate envelope, FedEx, FedEx MPS, Fedex Freight, Shipito Air Mail, DHL.
