SPSR Express logo SPSR Express courier service will be delivering pacakges from British and American online stores directly. Expected delivery time is 3-7 days while the price will be about $20 per kilogramm. It is significantly faster than USPS Priority Mail International and USPS Express Mail International (Russian post and EMS).

Starting February 18th, 2013 SPSR Express will start getting packages from International delivery services directly (thus avoiding Russian post). SPSR has signed agreements with British WorldNet Direct and Scandinavian Smartguy already. The former helps to deliver packages from about half of the British online retailers including ASOS. WorldNet Direct has been testing SPSR Express services. SPSR Express is planning to sign an agreement with american Fiftyone that delivers purchases from more than 200 american online retailers inlcuding DKNY, Macy’s, Sears, Shoes, etc. By the end of the year SPSR expects to deliver 20% of international packages to Russia.

Hopefully Shipito freight forwarder will sign an agreement with SPSR Express as well. Otherwise it will lose many customers from Russia who can use SPSR Express directly or via other freight forwarders (like Pochtoy, Qwintry, Shopotam, NYCMSK).

Shipito received the following notification from Polonez Parcel regarding shipping to the Ukraine:

We would like to inform you that Ukrainian custom standards have been updated. According to
new regulations a recipient may not receive more than one package withiin a six week period. Should this regulation be broken, and a recipient receives more than one package, despite its low value Customs will automaticly apply high duty and tax fees. If you are sending more than one package to a certain address, send your packages to different individuals who live at specified address.

As a reminder: the following information must be included on the declaration:

  • Sender name, address and telephone number
  • Recipient name, address and telephone number
  • Parcel weight
  • Parcel value in USD
  • Parcel contents must be very detailed. Each category of items must be listed with its amount and value.

If the package contains any food, its weight must be also provided.
Example how to describe parcel’s contents:

  • Shoes- 3 pairs
  • Peanut butter- 2 pcs- 2 lbs
  • Chocolates- 4 pcs- 1.5 lbs
  • Cearal- 2 pcs- 0.5 lbs

To avoid customs clearance problems please comply with the following requirements:

  • Only up to 2 kg (4.4lbs) of one specific food product (in its original packaging) per one parcel is allowed. Total collective weight of all food products cannot exceed 10 kg (22 lbs) per parcel.

Packages with lithium batteries and electronics with lithium, Li-ion, Li-pol batteries can be delivered through Shipito Airmail Priority shipping method again. Tracking is not available at this moment, but packages are insured. Shipito Airmail Priority packages are handled by postal services around the world.

USPS does not accept lithium batteries and electronics with them because they use passenger planes to transport packages. But some other postal services do NOT have these restrictions, because they use cargo planes. Shipito Airmail Priority packages containing lithium, Li-ion, Li-pol batteries are routed through these postal services, so you may easily overcome the lithium battery restrictions! Moreover Shipito Airmail Priority is cheaper than USPS for light and small packages, so you can even save money by using it.

Update (08/13/2012)
Customers from Russia can also use Shipito Airmail Express. This shipping method comes with both tracking and insurance.

Update (11/07/2012)
Customers from Russia can also use Russian Post Standard. This shipping method comes with both tracking and insurance.

Update (11/11/2012)
Effective Nov. 15, 2012, USPS will start accepting specific quantities of lithium batteries – when installed in the equipment they are intended to operate – to be sent to many international destinations, when permitted by the destination or host country.

Shipito has offered a new way to send packages with lithium batteries and electronics for its customers from Russia. Shipito offers Polonez Parcel for customers from Russia now. Polonez Parcel packages are shipped by Container to Poland and then given to the postal service for delivery in Russia.

Polonez Parcel limitations:

  • Maximum weight is 44 lbs, maximum size 47″x23″x23″(should be more than enough for the large 36″x17″x17″ consolidation box)
  • No insuranceis available. Polonez unfortunately does not insure packages delivered by the postal service. For this reason, we do not recommend shipping expensive packages. Better solution is to remove lithium batteries from your electronics, ship actual devices by USPS with tracking and insurance, and use Polonez only for batteries.
  • Minimum chargeable weight is 20 lbs, so even if you ship small package, you will pay the same as for 20 lbs!
  • Dimensional weight formula is L x W x H / 140, dimensional weight is used if higher than actual weight.
  • Polonez claims delivery in about two months, but it is not guaranteed, and it may take even little longer than that.
  • Polonez picks up packages once a month, usually last complete weekend in the given month.
  • Available from California warehouses of Shipito only, no Polonez package can be shipped from the Oregon warehouse (You can transfer your package from Oregon to California for a fee).

Polonez Parcel is very expensive for Russia. For example, I have compared the cost of shipping via USPS, Shipito Airmail and Polonez parcel for my two packages sent in 2012 via USPS Express Mail International:

Shipito Airmail vs. USPS vs. Polonez

Shipito Airmail vs. USPS Express Mail vs. Polonez (29 lbs, 37″x19″x14″)

Shipito Airmail vs. USPS Express Mail vs. Polonez

Shipito Airmail vs. USPS Express Mail vs. Polonez (36.80 lbs, 36″x18″x17″)

Please note that Shipito allows to deliver lithium batteries and electronics with lithium, Li-ion, Li-pol batteries through Airmail Priority and Airmail Express shipping methods:

See the Shipito Calculator for shipping options and calculating postage for your parcel.

Most freight forwarding services like Shipito charge for package consolidation. Shipito charges $2 per consolidated package if you use a paid Virtual Mailbox plan ($50/year or $10/month). To avoid additional consolidation charges always use the “Group my items into as few shipments as possible” option on Amazon.

How to select “Group my items into as few shipments as possible” on Amazon

  1. Add all the items to your cart.
  2. When asked, select “Group my items into as few shipments as possible” as your shipping preference.

Amazon: Shipping Details: "Group my items into as few shipments as possible"

If you don’t care about consolidation fees prefer to ship faster, choose the “Ship my items as soon as possible (additional shipping charges may apply)” option instead.

How do I take advantage of FREE Super Saver Shipping?

  1. Place over $25 of eligible Amazon products in your Shopping Cart. Eligible items will say “FREE Super Saver Shipping…” next to their price:

    Amazon: Free super saver shipping

  2. Proceed to checkout.
  3. Ship your items to a single U.S. address.
  4. Select Super Saver Shipping as your shipping speed. Please note that your order will take an additional 3 to 5 days to ship.
  5. Select “Group my items into as few shipments as possible” as your shipping preference.
  6. Place your order, and enjoy the free shipping.

Problems with “Group my items into as few shipments as possible” option

If you make a single order on Amazon, there are several reasons why you may get it in multiple packages:

  • Amazon has a marketplace. Orders from many sellers of the marketplace are not fulfilled and shipped by Amazon itself.
  • Some items are shipped from different Amazon fulfillment centers.
  • Orders marked as gifts may arrive as several packages.

But this list is not complete. For example, I ordered 4 toys from Amazon last week. All these toys were fulfilled and shipped by Amazon. All 4 toys would fit into a 26x13x13 box. But Amazon has sent these toys in 3 packages, although they were sent from the same fulfillment center and all of them were shipped the same day! So the following message about quicker service can be disappointing despite what Amazon thinks about it:

Greetings from Amazon.com, We thought you’d like to know that we shipped this portion of your order separately to give you quicker service. You won’t be charged any extra shipping fees, and the remainder of your order will follow as soon as those items become available.

If you use Shipito for sending packages overseas, you can always upgrade your free service plan to the Virtual Mailbox to enable package consolidation. But when using any freight forwarder you should always keep in your mind that you may get multiple packages instead of just one.

How to combine multiple Amazon orders into the same shipment

When possible, Amazon tries to combine multiple orders into the same shipment. This helps Amazon to reduce the number of packages they need to send to you, so you receive fewer packages and have less packaging material to dispose of when you receive your orders.

Amazon tries to combine multiple orders into the same shipment if the orders meet the following criteria:

  • Multiple orders are placed through the same customer account
  • The orders are being shipped to the same address.
  • Items from each order are located at the same Amazon fulfillment center.
  • The orders are shipping at around the same time.

There are some cases when Amazon won’t be able to combine shipments. For instance, they may not be able to combine the following types of orders:

  • Orders that can’t be shipped from the same fulfillment center to meet your promised delivery date.
  • Orders shipping from different fulfillment centers.
  • Orders being shipped to different addresses.
  • Orders being shipped to an international shipping address.
  • Orders marked as gifts.

Amazon will also try to combine orders for items that are placed via 1-Click ordering into a single order if the orders are placed in the same 30-minute time period.

VIAddress is a worldwide shipping forwarder offering a USA virtual address for making online purchases in America. Its membership is free. There are no fees for package consolidation, you may store your packages for free for 90 days. Assisted purchases are available. And VIAddress can ship to worldwide destinations via UPS, FEDEX, DHL, USPS. Looks attractive, isn’t it? Let’s find out whether there is any catch.

Comparing VIAddress and Shipito shipping rates

If you take a look onto VIAdress homepage, you will find a very attractive chart:

VIAdress comparison chart on VIAdress.com

So I decided to compare VIAdress estimated shipping costs to the costs of real packages I sent to Russia in 2011 via USPS Express Mail using Shipito

Weight, lbs VIAddress Estemation Shipito
12.3 $127.38 $121.89
19.9 $180.42 $135.25
34.7 $279.86 $222.59

VIAdress: Estimated charges for sending 12.3lbs package to Russia

VIAdress: Estimated charges for sending 19.9 lbs package to Russia

VIAdress: Estimated charges for sending 34.7 lbs package to Russia

I do pay $50 for a yearly membership in Shipito, while VIAdress membership is free. But if I send a package of 34.7 lbs via USPS to Russia using VIAddress, I will pay extra $55+ compared to Shipito.

Some more details about VIAddress

Unfortunately shipping fees is not the only problem of VIAddress. VIAdress has the lowest possible rating on BBB. And there many complaints about VIAddress from around the world, some of them even lead an investigation by The Indiana Attorney General’s office.

Would you recommend to use VIAddress?

I have never been a customer of VIAddress, but personally I prefer to stay away from it.

Shipito shipping rates are one of the best. Considering the amount of services Shipito provides, their quality and cost, I think Shipito is one of the best freight forwarding companies.

Apple iPad2 became available for pre-order on March 2011. But is it possible to order it in the USA from outside the United States and ship it to Australia, India, Brazil, Mexico, China, Russia or any country in the world? Let’s find out.

Purchasing Apple iPad 2 at Apple Online Store from outside the US using freight forwarders

Note that Apple iPad 2 3G is sold in an AT&T and Verizon versions, non-US customers should go for the AT&T model as it comes unlocked (which enables 3G usage outside the United States).

If you try to purchase Apple iPad 2 at Apple Online Store USA from outsite the U.S., you will get the following message:

Thank you for your recent order with the Apple Online Store. We appreciate your business.

We are unable to complete your order. We do not ship to international, freight forwarder, APO, FPO, or P.O. Box addresses.

We offer the following information:

International Shipping: We are unable to ship to an international address. Therefore your order has been cancelled. Please visit the Apple Store Worldwide for the Apple Store Store in your country of residence.

Freight Forwarders: We do not ship to Freight Forwarders. Therefore your order has been cancelled.

APO, FPO or Post Office Boxes: Our carriers are unable to deliver orders to these addresses. Please visit http://www.apple.com/orderstatus to change your address to a physical address, so that we may continue processing your order. If we do not receive a response from you within one week, your order will be cancelled. You will need to login to your account with your Apple ID to locate this order.

As you can see, you can’t purchase Apple iPad 2 from Apple Online Store even if you use freight forwarders like Shipito and MyUS. For example, shipito customers reported problems with Apple Online Store many times:

Problems purchasing in Apple Online Store: Freight Forwarders: We do not ship to Freight Forwarders. Therefore your order has been cancelled.

So if you plan to use a freight/parcel/package forwarder, you need to find a small one, which is unknown to Apple Online Store yet. Of course it is much more risky to use small freight forwarders instead of a reliable well known one like Shipito, MyUS, BundleBox.

What about other online stores? May be we can find a retail store that sells iPad 2 and offers international shipping?

Purchasing Apple iPad 2 at online stores offering international shipping

Let’s visit B&H Photo Video first. It is a well known US shop that offers international shipping. Searching for iPad 2 gives:

This item is not available for purchase online. Please call us at 800.606.6969, or visit our NY Superstore.

Apple iPad 2 can be bought on Amazon USA. On Amazon iPad 2 is offered not only by Apple, but also by many merchants. Make sure to learn about their rating taking into account the number of ratings before purchasing.

Apple iPad 2 on Amazon: Price, Shipping cost, Condition, Rating, Number of ratings" title="Apple iPad 2 on Amazon: Price, Shipping cost, Condition, Rating, Number of ratings

Most Amazon merchants ship to the USA only, so you will need a freight forwarder like Shipito.

Purchasing Apple iPad 2 on eBay

You can find Apple iPad 2 on eBay. Although some sellers may offer international shipping, in many cases it is cheaper to use a freight forwarder like Shipito.

Purchasing Apple iPad 2 using Shipito assisted purchases

Shipito allows you to buy Apple iPad 2 using assisted purchases. They use not the addresses of their warehouses, but other addresses to purchase an iPad 2. To place an order you will need to fill up the balance of your account by bank transfer, to the amount of:
1. $8.5 + cost of goods (with state taxes)*108%
($8.5 and 8% – is a fee for assisted purchase)
2. Cost of delivery to your country.

The good thing about Shipito is that it allows to deliver iPads and other electronics with lithium, Li-Pol, Li-Ion batteries to many countries of the world using Shipito Airmail Priority shipping method. Your package shipped by Shipito Airmail will be delivered using regular postal service, but you will overcome USPS restrictions for shipping lithium betteries and electronics with them. Shipito Airmail Priority packages are insured.

Share your experience about purchasing Apple iPad 2 from outside the US

Have you bought Apple iPad 2 from outside the US? Where did you buy it and how did you ship it to your country?

My post about Comparison of Shipito and BundleBox had an immediate reaction from Nicola M.:

If you are a user that is likely to ship expensive pieces of apparel, shoes, hightech, gear/equipment – you might want to try BundleBox.

USPS is NOT comparable to FedEx. FedEx is the most cost-efficient. It provides a much better service than USPS. USPS is a lot cheaper but there are a lot of issues with packages being lost, broken, etc – Not to mention the fact that USPS offer a very poor customer service, compared to FedEx.

The level of service is key to explaining the different shipping rates.

If I may object to the way you conducted your comparison, I am not sure you are comparing apples with apples.

I do recognize that I wasn’t able to compare shipping rates of Fedex when sending via BundleBox and Shipito. The reason for that is that the Shipito calculator didn’t show me any rates for Fedex.

Another reason for me not to use Fedex is because they don’t seem to have a customs broker in Russia at all (!). So unless I want to risk my package to be returned, there is no reason to use it (Note that you will need to pay the return fee in case of return). One can try to send the following package to Russia:

  1. Declared value up to 200 EUR
  2. Weight up to 20 Kg.
  3. Up to five identical pieces in one parcel. (Can be 5 pieces of “A” and 4 pieces of “B” = 9, but not 6 pieces of “A”)

But even Nicola has mentioned that Fedex is for expensive pieces of apparel, shoes, hightech, gear/equipment, so Fedex is clearly not an option for Russia. Now let’s leave Russia alone.

As for Fedex in general, Shipito offers “huge discounts negotiated” on behalf of their customers. And it has a warehouses in Portland, Oregon. Any purchase shipped to Oregon is not charged sales tax.

Is Fedex about service and USPS about lost and damaged packages?

I must admit that USPS is not ideal. But none of my packages arrived damaged and none of them were lost. I really had some problems with the Russian post, and I couldn’t get any reply about package I filed a claim about for more than a month. But this has nothing to do with USPS.

During the last 6 months I received 39 packages that were sent mainly by USPS and UPS to my Shipito mailbox. And I sent all my consolidated packages to Russia via USPS Priority Mail and USPS Express Mail. Plus I got more than 10 packages from US sellers, who sent them to me directly via USPS and UPS. Nothing was damaged or lost (not my HP Envy laptop, not my Panasonic TM700 Camcorder, not 3 my Kindle book readers, not my pretty expensive clothing from private shopping clubs like Ideeli.

Shipito: 39 packages received, 9 packages sent

Shipito: 39 packages received, 9 packages sent

I didn’t have any problem with Fedex as well. But I was really disappointed when they left a couple of my packages at the entrance of an apartment house in San Francisco. They didn’t even try to call me. This was the time I decided to avoid them, since I didn’t see any reason to pay higher fees for such a service.

Even if you don’t like USPS, you can try to use UPS instead. There might be more risk to use USPS instead of UPS, Fedex or DHL, and the USPS service might be worse than what alternative companies offer, but at least your USPS packages can be insured and have tracking numbers.

Share your experience with USPS, UPS, Fedex, DHL,…

Shipito Package Consolidation

Package consolidation is a process where packages are taken and put in one bigger box. When Shipito consolidates packages, they use a box you selected on consolidation page (usually USPS size limit 26″x13″x13″).

Package/Parcel Consolidation: Bigger box vs. smaller box

A bigger box is available on Shipito (36″x17″x17″). But please note that the bigger box has limitations for choosing shipping methods (some countries have lower size limits for postal shipments). You will see if you can select your preferred shipping method on consolidation page.

Also note that big and heavy packages increase risk of damages during shipping. The 36″x17″x17″ box is riskier to ship than the 26″x13″x13″ box.

If you need bigger box, Shipito has offers a 37″x37″x26″ box which is really big (you can use it for DHL, FedEx Freight or Shipsourcing container). You can also place a special request and Shipito will pack your packages on the pallet (might not be cheaper due to the weight and cost of the pallet).

If it is not possible to consolidate all packages/parcels into ONE box

Shipito tries to consolidate all packages in one box. If that is not possible they automatically use another box. You can also select to return extra packages back in your mailbox on the consolidation page.

Remove retail packaging vs. removing ALL packaging vs. keeping outside box

Another useful feature that Shipito offers is the Package removal.

For example retailer sends a pair of shoes packed in the nice retail/product box which is placed in bigger box for shipping. There are three options available:

  • Keep outside box (they will consolidate the box as received)
  • Keep retail packaging (outside box is thrown away, shoe box stays)
  • Remove all unnecessary packaging (shoe box is thrown away, only shoes are packed)
Shipito package consolidation page: Keep outside box, Keep retail packaging, Remove all unnecessary packaging

Shipito package consolidation page: Keep outside box, Keep retail packaging, Remove all unnecessary packaging

If you are concerned about fragile items, you can place a Special request, so that Shipito can add extra packaging material. Or just keep fragile items in original boxes (for extra layer of protection).

Note that by removing all unnecessary packaging you can save on shipping a lot, since packages become smaller and lighter. But please note that if you will need to return an item, it will have to return it in retail packaging.

Can’t I just order multiple items from a large online store like Amazon and avoid consolidation?

Amazon prices are usually good, but sometimes you may find the same stuff cheaper elsewhere. But the major problem is that even if you make a single order, there are several reasons why you may get it in multiple packages:

  • Amazon has a marketplace. Orders from many sellers of the marketplace are not fulfilled and shipped by Amazon itself.
  • Some items are shipped from different Amazon fulfillment centers.
  • Orders marked as gifts may arrive as several packages.

But this list doesn’t seem to be complete. For example, I ordered 4 toys from Amazon last week. All these toys were fulfilled and shipped by Amazon. All 4 toys would fit into a 26x13x13 box. But Amazon has sent these toys in 3 packages, although they were sent from the same fulfillment center and all of them were shipped the same day.

Many other online retailers besides Amazon have sent me multiple packages instead of only one. But if you use Shipito, you can always upgrade your free service plan to Virtual Mailbox to enable package consolidation if you need it.

How to enable Shipito Package Consolidation

You will need VIRTUAL MAILBOX or NEW VIRTUAL MAILBOX service plan. Personally I use the VIRTUAL MAILBOX for $50/year. You can also use it for $10/month.

How to change / upgrade your “INDIVIDUAL PACKAGES” service plan to enable package consolidation:

  1. Login to your Shipito account.
  2. Click onto “Show / hide” beside “Your Shipito and Home Address”
  3. Click onto “change / upgrade” beside “Shipito ENG – INDIVIDUAL PACKAGES”
  4. Select VIRTUAL MAILBOX or NEW VIRTUAL MAILBOX

Change / upgrade Shipito Service Plan

Can you Save by Consolidating Packages?

I’ve been using Shipito Virtual Mailbox for 14 months. I pay $50 for the Virtual Mailbox plus $2 for every consolidated package. I’ve consolidated 110 packages into 19 (one of the packages and a magazine were sent without consolidation, one of the packages was returned to the seller, two packages were transfered from Oregon warehouse to Torrance). This allowed me to save $4402.91 – $50*2 = $4302.91 where $50*2 is the cost of the Virtual Mailbox for 2 years.

Shipito package consolidation savings

Shipito package consolidation savings

One of the best savings for me were with jewerly items. The lowest shipping rate fee for me that comes with tracking costs about $41 (cheaper methods are also available, but I prefer to be able to track my packages), plus I pay $8.5 for mailing my package out. If I consolidate 2 jewerly items, I still pay $41 + $8.5, plus I pay $4 for the package consolidation. And if I consolidate jewerly packages with something bigger, I can save even more, because jewerly is small and weighs almost nothing.

Also I always remove shoe boxes during consolidation. It allows to save a lot, although I lose a chance to return items due to the lack of the retail packages.

It is interesting that sometimes you can save not only by consolidating, but also by just repacking:
